Reddit is the single most useful English-language platform for researching plastic surgery in Korea. Unlike clinic websites (marketing), agency blogs (paid), or Instagram (curated), Reddit has real patients sharing unfiltered experiences — including the bad ones. But you need to know how to separate genuine reviews from clinic marketing disguised as user posts.
Why Reddit Matters for Korea Surgery Research
When you search "plastic surgery Korea" on Google, the first page is dominated by clinic ads, medical tourism agencies (taking 15–30% commission), and SEO content farms. Reddit offers something these don't: anonymous, uncompensated patient experiences with real outcomes and honest regrets.
That said, Reddit isn't perfect. It has survivorship bias (happy patients post more than unhappy ones), clinic shills (marketing accounts posing as patients), and outdated information. See our timing guide for current seasonal advice (a 2019 review may not reflect a clinic's current quality). Our clinic selection guide covers verification steps that complement Reddit. Hidden costs are another topic Reddit covers well Reddit research.
Key Subreddits & How to Use Them
r/PlasticSurgery
Largest community. Search "Korea" or specific procedure + "Korea." Sort by new for latest experiences.
r/KoreanBeauty / r/AsianBeauty
Skin treatment experiences. Laser, PRP, dermatology clinic reviews.
r/HairTransplants
FUE experiences in Korea. Before/after timelines. Clinic comparisons with Turkey.
Search technique
Use: "site:reddit.com [procedure] korea [year]" in Google for targeted results.
For each clinic mentioned positively on Reddit, cross-reference with our credential verification process — check KAPRS certification, ask for before/afters, and get your own consultation. Never book based on a single Reddit post.
How to Read Reddit Reviews (Critically)
Look for detail. Genuine reviews mention specific things: the consultation experience, wait times, coordinator's English level, post-op care quality, unexpected costs. Vague "best clinic ever!" posts with no specifics are suspect.
Check the account. Click the username. Is it a brand-new account with one post? Probably marketing. Does the person have a history of posting in other subreddits? More likely genuine. Has the same account recommended the same clinic multiple times? Suspicious.
Weight negative reviews carefully. Unhappy patients have less incentive to lie than clinics have to fake positive reviews. If multiple people report the same problem (long waits, poor communication, unexpected charges), take it seriously.
Check the date. A glowing 2020 review may be irrelevant — clinics change surgeons, raise prices, and shift focus. Prioritize reviews from the last 12 months.
Red Flags: Fake Reviews & Clinic Shills
Likely Fake
- x New account, single post
- x Clinic name dropped multiple times
- x No mention of any negatives
- x Includes clinic contact info / booking link
- x Generic praise, no specific details
Likely Genuine
- + Established account with varied posts
- + Mentions both pros AND cons
- + Specific details (dates, costs, recovery)
- + Responds to follow-up questions
- + Posts timeline updates (month 1, 3, 6)
Beyond Reddit: Korean Review Platforms
Reddit is your English-language starting point, but Korean patients use different platforms — and those reviews are far more numerous and detailed:
Gangnam Unni (강남언니) app: Korea's #1 cosmetic surgery review platform. Thousands of verified patient reviews with before/after photos. Interface is in Korean but Google Translate works surprisingly well on screenshots.
Naver cafe (네이버 카페): Korean community forums. Foreign patients can use translation apps. Search "[clinic name] 후기" (review) for patient experiences. Requires a Naver account. More authentic than English platforms because clinics rarely monitor Korean forums for international marketing. Body contouring and hair transplant reviews are also growing on Reddit marketing.
Babitalk (바비톡): Another Korean surgery review app. Smaller than Gangnam Unni but growing. Has before/after photo verification.
For navigating these platforms, basic Korean helps. See our English clinic guide for language navigation tips and the government interpreter hotline (1577-7129).
